The high tech industry is well-positioned to contribute to a global shift toward sustainability. Companies have the opportunity to integrate environmental and social aspects of sustainability into core business strategy, operations, and product designand in the process realize enormous efficiency gains. In addition, high tech tools are needed to track sustainability progress in business processes and accounting systems, both within the sector and in other industries. At The Natural Step, we're excited by Silicon Valley's full throttle commitment to innovation. We see that this energy has significant potential to address environmental and social issues. In 2001, with support from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation,
The Natural Step launched research efforts on obstacles and opportunities
for the high tech sector and sustainability. In 2002, the Silicon Valley
Social Venture Fund granted The Natural Step additional funds to build
awareness and identify project opportunities in Silicon Valley. In 2004,
we are continuing this work as we focus on engagements with companies. |
